Blind Mice and Evolution of the Eye

’Prosthetic’ retinal cells let blind mice see light

Just read this old press release about a research breakthrough by Wayne State University School of Medicine in which the photosensitive pigment from an alga was inserted into the retinal ganglion cells of blind mice, and their visual responses were restored.

This, alongside with the mapping of the sea urchine genome gives us some clues about the slow evolution of the mammalian camera eye.
